Exquisite Corpse - A Journal of Letters and Life

How in the world, you may ask, does this journal continue to be published and to, apparently, flourish? We have half million readers a month, we publish better and better material, we are praised, reviled, loved, and threatened -- and yet, we don't have a penny! Not once in the life of the print journal were we this broke! Our old computers have just about given up. There is an appeal on the homepage of this issue: please read it and be generous. Humbly, the Editor. Speaking of this issue, it is HUMONGOUS. We almost named it THE HUMONGOUS ISSUE, but Mark Spitzer pointed out that the issues have been getting bigger and bigger all the time and it was inevitable that we would become humongous, so why call attention to the obvious? Well, one reason is that we had to buy more space on the server and "buy" is a sore point around this penurious joint. The mixed blessings of the computer age! While well-heeled dot-coms have been falling like dominoes, we have been thriving by publishing gratis material that the paying zines could only dream of. Arrgh! Please don't make me speak about money again. One year ago I gave a speech at Microsoft about the poetics of money and asked my audience to enroll in the New Orleans School for the Imagination (which is thriving, by the way!). A few of them did, and they are the only people who haven't lost a penny in the markets since Nasdaq went south. If we can't raise enough money to keep the office running, we might have to resort to advertising. Perhaps we should? What is your opinion, dear reader. E-mail us at: submissions@corpse.org with your answer. Ok, enough of crass necessity. In this issue, you will find the vibrating Corpse with her arms up to the elbows in the shimmering treasure-trunk of the ever-generative unconscious! Dig in! Particularly disgusting is Willie Smith's story about arachnid sex. It is a great bedtime story for bad children! Please note also that the poetry is unbearably brilliant and that two Roberts, Creeley and Bly, lead off the charge. So, send us some money. Here is Love, we have lots of it.
