Gaia
by Nick Eliopulos

Gaia! All mother will I sing ! Revered
Firm grounded nourisher of everything on earth.
Whatever traverses holy earth or the seas
Or climbs the air enjoys your dispensation.
From you sprout fine fruits and offspring;
Lady, you have power to give mortal men life
Or take it. But happy those you care for in
Your heart: all is generously present to them.
Fields thicken with life-giving nourishment,
Herds at pasture multiply, houses fill with
Splendid things. Right and law rule in the city
Blessed by plenty and wealth among women beautiful.
Children beam with youth and joy, gleeful girls
Dance the ringdance, their hands all blossoms,
Leaping on flowery carpets of meadow.
Such pleasures your servants enjoy,
Goddess sublime! Generous divinity!

     - Homeric Hymn #30

GAIA MAGAZINE

O Gaia, bring me up to speed in America
Sunshowers fellating the treetops
Macroscopic fertile bucolic broccoli
Verdant vegetable
Fecund with fetid stink of promises
O orgy of biology
O pussy-licking roadside reeds
O brittle cool air what kisses we cheek
O icicle playground
Surround me with shimmering daggers
O buckling asphalt with interspersed weeds
O ashen carpets of landfill
Encroach! And fill us with dread
A dumptruck surrenders its clutch
Over all terrain
The greenhouse effect
A collective post-coital puff
'Don't Tread On Me'
The tattered flag soaked with tears
And Thomas Jefferson a skilled gardener
So were my grandparents
All.
