Just Like Jim
by Greg Farnum

Just Like Jim Biotechnology scientists today patented a full-size human archetype. The multiple-genome construct (MGC) known by the technical name of "Just Like Jim" is reportedly based on a similarly named autonomous human subject (i.e., "Jim"). The scientists are quick to point out that the construct is not Jim, but embodies the subject's essential Jimness in all important respects. Academic researchers, however, fear the patent will lead to demands that people like Jim pay licensing fees. They note this may inhibit new product development. Biotech industry spokespersons dismiss the charge, though a patent infringement lawsuit has already been filed earlier today against an Ohio man who, the lawsuit claims, is illegally "Just Like Jim."
