Mark Spitzer interviews Andrei Codrescu

Lessons from The Poetry Lesson:
Mark Spitzer interviews Andrei Codrescu

The conversation took place in the bat cave deep beneath Andrei’s secret castle in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. As usual, he was kicking back in his vintage velvet Prussian throne and I was sitting on a pile of petrified guano. Around us, our ghost companions were watching the discussion in various states of indifference. On Andrei’s side, Ted Berrigan and Francois Villon were chilling out with Tzara and Pasternak. On my side, Rimbaud was pretending to ignore Edward Abbey and Bukowski, who were becoming increasingly intoxicated. Meanwhile, the walls oozed with the literary perspiration of the Earth.

Shock Devalued

Subject: Exquisite Corpse - Journal of Letters and Life: shock value
I first came to your site because the subtitle (A Journal of Letters and Love) interested me. However, upon reading one of the excerpts (http://www.corpse.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=449&Itemid=33 ) I found the content to be offensive and graphic. Having a history of eating disorders, I did not appreciate the way in which the writer in question dipicted his character the "anorexic bitch," and feel that posting this chapter of what must be a very "out-there" piece, turned your website from pursuing throught-provoking writing to publishing profanity just for it's shock value alone. I am a writer myself, and feel that despite this excerpts technical value it does not befit the tone of an otherwise great site. Maybe next time, before posting something potentially offensive you will consider your audience.

Thank you for your time,
Dena

Dena,

However, she is the most powerful person in the room and I suspect, modeled after powerful goddess Odysseus once encountered--just look at the dog. And it would be a sham not to publish intelligent work because it offends. Provocation in itself is an offense, is offensive. And by offending should set to conquer the equally outrageous defenses we unwittingly erect. To that yang, it is wit we need most of all. Wit and swear words, to be sure.

However, I see your point. I mean, thirty years of publishing contemporary, contemptible minds has lead us to this be-quotable anorexic bitch.

Hi Robin,

Nice to talk with you. I went to the exquisite cadaver site and was fascinated by Harriette's work. She grew in a different America than I did at the same time! I realized I knew that title from reading about the surrealists, not the publication.

Thanks for the heads up!

More work in 2010!

Best,
Ed Cionek

NY Subway Ad Campaign

A million New Yorkers are good without God.  Are you?

These words are part of a coordinated multi-organizational advertising campaign designed to raise awareness about people who don't believe in a god. The prominent ads will go up Monday, October 26, in a dozen Manhattan subway stations. Placed by Big Apple CoR, the New York City Coalition of Reason, with funding from the United Coalition of Reason, the ads feature an image of blue sky and clouds with the words superimposed over.

Reaching out to nontheists isn't the only goal of the subway campaign. "We want everyone to know that people can be good without religious beliefs," said John Rafferty, a spokesperson for Big Apple CoR. "There is a lot of misinformation out there about us. But we humanists, agnostics and atheists are part of society. We're your friends, neighbors coworkers and family members."

For more details on the subway ad campaign that signals the launch of Big Apple CoR, and for an image of the ad, go to www.bigapplecor.org . News will be forthcoming on further developments as they materialize.

The new Afghan Women’s Writing Project matches female Afghan students with overseas teachers and readers.  Volunteer writers lead online classrooms and the resultant pieces are posted on the project blog AWWPROJECT .  Reader responses are not only welcomed, but highly appreciated by the young women writers.  Please check out their poems and stories and let them know that they are heard.

Every morning when I start my day, I pray for the soul of my father. I put red roses on his grave and I kiss his grave soil and I think: where I kiss is heaven.
