I no longer live near
the river. Its the Midwest for me now. Ive moved from Oxford,
Mississippi to Columbus, OH where Im currently in the MFA program
at Ohio State. Im intrigued by your Mississippi River project.
Before moving to Columbus, I received a MA in Southern Studies (an even
more fruitless degree than the MFA) and spent two years researching
the school system in Tunica County, MS just below Memphis. Im
full of metaphor when it comes to the river and its effects on the lives
of people dependent on it.
Im not sure
I fully understand what youre looking for, but Ive always
envisioned the huge fault line that runs directly through upper Mississippi,
Memphis and eastward into Kentucky, finally giving way, opening a trough
of muddy water beneath Tunica sucking its casinos and all theyve
built down natures vengeful hole.
