The Nixon Resignation Distillation
by Tim Dardis
Author's Links

Good evening.

This is the 37th time
some matter
affected the national interest.

Watergate elected me.

It has become evident
I no longer have Congress.
I see the constitutional
conclusion. I would prefer
to finish the agony.

Discussions with leaders
concluded the matter:
the duties of this office
require a quitter.

To continue my vindication
would absorb the President
therefore Ford
will be sworn in.

I nominated good hands
passing to the Vice
the weight of understanding
all Americans. He assumes
essential wounds
the bitterness to lie.

This action hastened
desperately needed
America. My judgements made
the Nation, my cause
was right. Eternally.

Let me say
I leave with no bitter
judgements.

Let us join
that common commitment
of momentus achievement. But
challenges require
America's longest war
far reaching and difficult.

Americans unlocked China
the Middle East
100 million enemy friends.
Continue peace, cradle
crucial nuclear arms.

Terrible
weapons that destroy
civilization must continue
to expand. The two
strongest nations
live in confrontation.

Here in America
fortunate
people have liberty.
We better opportunity
striving without inflation.

I fought responsibilities
entrusted to me.
Sometimes I succeeded
sometimes I failed
but always I have heart
in the arena.

There is one cause
to which I devoted
the oath of office
this
sacred commitment
for all of our children
dying in war

I do God's grace.
