Poesy
Watching Cars on N. Bernedotte St.
by Paul Chassey

1st Canto

(12 AM)

neon asphalt
glows orange,
like christ, easter Sunday
calvary
portrayed as a busted streetlamp
transformer hums uselessly
trying to glimmer one
last ray of hope

2nd Canto
(2:30 AM)

it's am 2:30
all is quiet on n. bernedotte st
dare I leave my post
to piss?
the last driver
taxis in for a landing &
angry railroad curs
Snap and yowl
over something dead

3rd Canto
(4 AM)

i think the cars are mocking me
their cruel chrome
& empty headlights

flash taunts
& temptations
feather beds
silk gartered whores
pork roasts
& gallons of wine

4th Canto
(dawn)

the radio tower beckons red
against a pinking sky
at last
in the cool clear of morning
the dogs of heaven fall silent
as chains of sleep
hang broken from my eyes
the lamb of god cries out
for vengeance,
parsley
& mint jelly sauce
